About Redfin Mahseer
The redfin mahaseer (Tor tor), also called the giant or tor mahaseer is possibly the largest member of the carp (Cyprinidae) family. It is a top predator, and a highly prized sport and commercial fish. The body is robust, heavy and deep, usually silvery grey, although the colour is variable. Apart from reddish fins, that gave the species its common name, one of the most characteristic features of the redfin mahseer are its scales. They are prominent, thick and large, perhaps the largest in the fish world, reaching 20 cm. (3.4 in.) in diameter. The mouth is big and, like other cyprinids, has smallish, but sharp, teeth and large fleshy lips.
Redfin mahaseer reportedly grew up to 2.75 m. (9 ft.) with masses of around 54 kg. (119 lbs). Due to fishing pressure, however, a specimen of 1.5 m. (4.9 ft.) is now exceptional. The fish is omnivore, feeding on plant material, invertebrates and small fish. As a juvenile, redfin mahseer is commonly found in shoals, but as it grows, the species becomes mostly solitary. Spawning is triggered by floods, and usually takes place over rocks in clear fast-flowing water.
