About Tierra Del Fuego Province
Located at the southernmost tip of South America, Tierra del Fuego is a land of dramatic landscapes and rugged coastlines. The Tierra del Fuego archipelago is shared by Argentina and Chile, the border lying along the W. 68° 36 '38'’ meridian. With Antarctica just across the strait, it is the southmost habitable area in the world, with the province of Tierra del Fuego home to some 200,000 people, descendants of both native and several European immigrant groups. Apart from manufacturing and sheep farming, tourism plays an increasingly important role in the province’s economy. The visitors are attracted by impressive glaciers, penguin colonies and other wildlife sightings, skiing, and some of the most spectacular trout fishing on the planet.
The fishing season runs from November 1 to May 1 of the following year, and while there’s no bad time to fish in Tierra del Fuego, the biggest numbers of sea-run trout are said to hit the rivers in the late season, from February to April. Whatever time you come, you can count on cold, rain, and wind, so choose your clothes, waders, and footwear accordingly. Layered clothing is recommended. Targeted Fish Species
Sea-run brown trout are the main attraction in Tierra del Fuego, and no place on Earth produces bigger specimens than the Río Grande. These fish, which begin their lives in freshwater before migrating to the ocean to feed, return as massive, powerful trout that often exceed 20 pounds—and some even reach 30 pounds or more. Their aggressive nature, incredible stamina, and acrobatic fights make them one of the most thrilling species to catch with a fly rod.
Resident brown trout are also abundant in the region’s lakes and smaller rivers, offering year-round fishing opportunities. Rainbow trout, while less common, can be found in select waters such as Lago Fagnano. With its reputation for producing some of the largest trout on the planet, Tierra del Fuego is truly a bucket-list destination for serious anglers.
